Can You See The Northern Lights In Ireland?
The Northern Lights are right up there on many bucket lists. It’s one of those magical scenes people dream of seeing with their own eyes but may never witness. Well, if you’re wondering “Can You See The Northern Lights In Ireland“, I’m delighted to throw a big glowing YES your way. Yes you can. At the tender young age of 31 (HA), I have seen the northern lights three times in Ireland, and every sighting has been in the past year. There’s a big one ticked off my bucket list. And guess what? With a bit of preparation, you can tick it off too.
What Months Can You See The Northern Lights in Ireland?
Ah, now this can be a tricky one! Generally, your best chance to see the Aurora in Ireland is during winter months. But particularly October – April. Why? There are a few reasons, but mainly because the skies are clearest and the nights are longer. Also, the more north you go, the better your chances!
HOWEVER, my first (and most vivid) sighting to date, was in the summer. In May 2024 I was able to see the most vibrant display from my back garden. It’s just 5km outside of a town in the Midlands of Ireland. Much further south than you would normally see them – it’s not exactly the Arctic Circle is it?!

This time Dublin also got in on the action. Up until this point had been pretty much unheard of to see them in Dublin. Normally the light pollution would be much too severe, but during strong solar activity there were fabulous displays.
Since Ireland isn’t within the Arctic Circle, Geomagnetic activity needs to be really high for us to get a front-row seat to the magic. But as my experience proves, when the conditions are right, the Northern Lights can put on a show far beyond the usual spots.
Where can you see the Northern Lights in Ireland?
Generally, the more north you are, the better. While they were visible much further south in recent years, here are the most common places you will see them from:
- Donegal (most northern county)
- Antrim (most northern county in Northern Ireland)
- Sligo
- Mayo
But again, it completely depends on the conditions. These are just your best bet.
Can you see the Northern Lights with the naked eye?
Yes you absolutely can! If the conditions are right, you will see them with the naked eye. On my first sighting, the sky was lit up with the most incredible streaks of pink and green. I couldn’t believe how colourful they were. When conditions aren’t as great, it may just look like lighter streaks in the sky. During times like this, the colours may only be visible when you take a picture on “night mode” on your phone (or by using a camera). So yes, the Northern Lights can be seen with the naked eye, but how impressive they look depends on the strength of the display. Either way, it’s always worth looking up!
