What Insurance do I Need for my Campervan? Self-build Campervan Insurance Ireland
I get asked quite often “what kind of insurance do you have for your camper, is it commercial”. This is not the kind of insurance you get for a camper. You need campervan insurance, which can be difficult in Ireland, especially if (like me) you have a low-roof camper. For whatever reason, only a few companies will insure a low-roof camper.
Benefits of having your van converted to a camper
If you’ve converted a van into a campervan yourself, you’ll need the logbook changed to a camper before you can get the right insurance. To do this, you need an inspection done and this will be sent off to revenue, then you’ll be able to get your camper insurance. The extra benefit of this is the tax. Tax on a camper is much cheaper than a standard van. At the moment, it’s €102 for the year, no matter the size of the van.
How do I get campervan insurance Ireland?
I tried a few companies for quotes and none would insure my camper because it’s a low roof. In the end, I went with the Motor Caravan Club of Ireland. The van had been insured with them with the previous owners so it wasn’t too much hassle to get it reinsured. However, it took time. Why?
Regrettably, the previous owners had taken out several items before selling it to me (including the sink, cooker, table, and gas), which disqualified it from being classified as a camper. Consequently, the SQI assessment provided inaccurate results. I had to reinstall all these components to meet the insurance requirements. This serves as a crucial reminder for anyone considering the purchase of a camper. Make sure the owner doesn’t remove anything necessary.
Once I was able to send enough pictures to The Motorcaravan Club to show that everything was in order, they got me insured through Ornella Underwriting Limited – who they have a good deal with.
How much would it cost to insure a campervan? | Campervan Insurance Ireland cost
I have Comprehensive Campervan Insurance and my yearly premium is €379 which is pretty good. The only inconvenient thing is that for this policy, you must also have a car on the road – meaning I am currently paying a second insurance policy on a car for around the same price.
You can get it for slightly less but I paid an extra fee to include European Breakdown Assistance, because I know if I ever need it, I’ll be so glad to have paid the extra for it!

How old do you have to be to get campervan insurance in Ireland?
In Ireland, you must be 25 years old to obtain campervan insurance (as far as I’m aware!).
Conclusion
Navigating the world of campervan insurance in Ireland, especially for low-roof campers, can be difficult and confusing. From understanding the necessary coverage to finding insurers willing to insure your camper type, the process can definitely be time-consuming and frustrating. At least, this was my experience. Once you’re armed with the right knowledge though, you can streamline the process – again for this I recommend the Motorcaravan Club.
