We finally did our Cork trip. We went to the city for a night and then made our way to Kinsale – the beginning of the Wild Atlantic Way, and continued it along as far as Mizen Head, somewhere we’ve wanted to go for a while.
Cork City
Got to meet an old friend for a drink in Brick Lane, then had a little wander round the city in the dark.
We went to a place called Liberty Grill for breakfast and then had a walk around the streets.
Old head of Kinsale
Spent an hour having a look around, except rain/snow was never far away so in the end we gave up and headed back to the car. On our way to Kinsale and typically the torrential rain started. We weren’t brave enough to get out exploring in it and just drove through, but luckily by the time we got to the old head of Kinsale it had decided to take a break.
The weather was impossible! One minute the rain would be hammering down. Then the skies would clear and it would be like a spring day, blue skies and sun shining, but not before long the clouds would roll in again. The sky was every colour!
Galley Head Lighthouse
We accidentally came across The Galley Head Lighthouse, just outside of Rosscarbery. It was awesome though! When we pulled up we thought it was snowing, but it wasn’t, it was sea foam whirling through the air. The waves were literally hurling themselves at the rocks, throwing foam into the sky. The wind and waves were soo loud, I’ve never heard anything like it.
Skibereen
We stayed in Skibereen that night, in the West Cork Hotel. It was a bargain and included breakfast. THE ROOM ALSO HAD A BATH YAASSS!
We woke, fed ourselves and after a quick look around the town we went to Mizen head, stopping in a few places along the way.
Mizen Head
Mizen head was a huge disappointment. Maybe we were stupid for not realizing, but because of the time of year, it’s only open on weekends. I think its sad that part of the coastline, can be “Closed”. Sad we didn’t get to see the one thing we’d planned on seeing.
Have to say though, we did get to see some stunning views so all in all, so glad we went. It just means now we have an excuse to go back again! Not that we’d really have needed one..
Rather than leave it on a disappointed note, we drove around for another while before heading home. It was a great couple of days and we’ll definitely be going back!
